Internal links: The free traffic multiplier everyone ignores

When people talk about links in SEO, they almost always mean backlinks. But the most overlooked win sits somewhere else entirely: your internal links. They're free, fully within your control and yet something most sites handle at random.
Why internal links work
Internal links do three things at once. They help Google find and understand your pages, they distribute authority (link equity) across the site, and they guide the user to the next logical step. Done right, you lift both rankings and conversion at the same time.
The three most common mistakes
- Important pages get almost no internal links.
- Every link uses the same meaningless anchor text ("read more").
- There's no deliberate structure — links appear at random.
The solution is a deliberate strategy. Start by identifying your most important commercial pages and make sure they get plenty of relevant internal links with descriptive anchor text. This is the core of good on-page SEO.
How to get started
Make a simple overview of your most important pages. Then find relevant places in your existing content where it makes sense to link to them. Remember that a well-functioning site also needs a solid technical foundation — read more in my guide to technical SEO.
